Independent power producer Darling Wind Power is to enter into a 20-year contract with the City of Cape Town for the supply of wind-generated electricity, the city said on Wednesday Aug 2, 2006. Executive Mayor Helen Zille, city manager Achmat Ebrahim and Darling Wind Power CEO Hermann Oelsner would sign a contract for the supply of environmentally friendly electricity on Thursday afternoon. “The signing of the power-purchase agreement is a bold step by the city to give its residents an opportunity to participate in addressing the looming effects of global warming through the purchase of ‘green electricity’,” the municipality said in a statement. The Darling wind farm is situated about 70 km north of Cape Town in an area where with strong winds blow over the hills of the Swartland. Ultimately, the wind farm will produce 13 MW of power from ten 1,3 MW wind turbines. Additional information: M&G News date: 02/08/2006 |
